Note: Published October 29, 2026. Apple announced the OLED iPad mini on October 26. Preorders opened October 28, and it ships November 6. Prices below were checked the morning of October 29 and will move, so check the live listing before you buy.
Apple just gave the iPad mini an OLED screen, an A20 Pro chip, and an IP67 rating. It starts at $699, which is $100 more than the 2024 model’s $599 launch price.
If an iPad mini already rides in your truck or sits by your register, you have three options: upgrade, keep yours, or buy a discounted 2024 model. How you use it at work decides which.
Who this bites
This is for people who use an iPad mini as a work tool:
- Builders and contractors taking field notes, marking up plans with a Pencil, and photographing site conditions.
- Shop owners running a point-of-sale app, counting inventory, or checking stock on the floor.
- Anyone who reads a lot of docs: PDFs, manuals, contracts, spec sheets.
- People who travel and want a small screen with cellular that fits in a jacket pocket.
The new one is better. The question is whether it fixes a problem you actually have, at a price that beats a discounted 2024 model.
What usually fails: upgrading for specs you won’t use
You pay for AI speed you never touch. Apple says the A20 Pro delivers up to 4.5x faster AI performance and up to 2.7x faster graphics than the previous generation. If your day is a POS app, notes, email, and PDFs, the 2024 chip already handles it. A faster chip won’t speed up a card swipe when the bottleneck is your Wi-Fi or payment processor.
You pay for a display you’ll keep in a rugged case under fluorescent lights. OLED shines on contrast and HDR video. On a counter running inventory all day, most of that never shows.
You buy nano-texture on a tier you didn’t need. Nano-texture glass is a $100 option, but only on 256GB and 512GB models. A 256GB nano-texture Wi-Fi model is $899, $200 more than the base.
You assume water resistance means waterproof. IP67 is a lab rating: up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529, per Apple. It covers rain and spills, and Apple notes the resistance isn’t permanent.
The fix: write down your three most common tablet tasks, then check which new features touch them.
OLED iPad mini vs 2024 iPad mini: the comparison
Specs come from Apple’s tech specs pages for each model. Prices are Apple’s U.S. list prices.
| iPad mini (A17 Pro, 2024) | iPad mini (A20 Pro, 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Launch price (128GB Wi-Fi) | $599 | $699 |
| Display | 8.3-inch Liquid Retina, LED-backlit IPS | 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR, OLED |
| Resolution | 2266 x 1488 at 326 ppi | 2316 x 1512 at 326 ppi |
| Brightness | 500 nits | 600 nits SDR; 1,200 nits peak (HDR only) |
| Nano-texture option | No | Yes, 256GB and 512GB only (+$100) |
| Water and dust | No rating | IP67 (1m up to 30 min) |
| Chip | A17 Pro: 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU | A20 Pro: 5-core CPU (128/256GB) or 6-core CPU (512GB), 7-core GPU |
| Neural Engine | 16-core | 16-core; Dual 16-core on 512GB |
| Thickness | 6.3 mm | 5.4 mm |
| Weight (Wi-Fi) | 293 g (0.65 lb) | 255 g (0.56 lb) |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 | Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 (Apple N1 chip) |
| Cellular | 5G (sub-6 GHz) | 5G (sub-6 GHz), Apple C2 modem |
| Front camera | 12MP Center Stage | 12MP Center Stage, landscape edge |
| Battery (Apple rating) | Up to 10 hours web/video on Wi-Fi | Up to 10 hours web/video on Wi-Fi |
| Pencil support | Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C) | Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C) |
| Unlock | Touch ID (top button) | Touch ID (top button) |
Two lines in that table matter more than the rest for most work buyers. The battery rating is the same, so the new one doesn’t last longer on paper. Pencil support is also the same, so your Pencil Pro carries over.
What the new model costs, by configuration
All Apple U.S. prices, checked Oct 29, 2026, 7:05 AM ET on Apple’s iPad mini store page.
| Storage | Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi + Cellular | Nano-texture Wi-Fi | Nano-texture Cellular |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 128GB | $699 | $849 | Not offered | Not offered |
| 256GB | $799 | $949 | $899 | $1,049 |
| 512GB | $999 | $1,149 | $1,099 | $1,249 |
So the $849 price buys the 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. It’s not a higher storage tier. Cellular adds $150 at every tier. The 512GB models are the only ones with the 6-core CPU and the Dual 16-core Neural Engine.
What the 2024 model costs now
When we checked, Apple’s iPad mini store page listed only the A20 Pro model. The 2024 model is still easy to find:
- Apple Certified Refurbished, checked Oct 29, 2026, 7:08 AM ET: 128GB Wi-Fi $509 (was $599), 256GB Wi-Fi $599 (was $699), 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular $639 (was $749), 256GB Wi-Fi + Cellular $729, 512GB Wi-Fi $769. Apple’s refurbs come with a new battery and outer shell and the same one-year warranty as new.
- Amazon, new, checked Oct 29, 2026, 7:06 AM ET: 128GB Wi-Fi in Space Gray at $559.99, against a $599 list price.
That gives you three useful price gaps for a 128GB Wi-Fi tablet:
- New OLED vs. Apple refurb 2024: $190
- New OLED vs. Amazon new 2024: $139.01
- Cellular OLED ($849) vs. cellular refurb 2024 ($639): $210
The decision matrix
Find the row that matches how you work. If two rows fit, the one with the stronger reason wins.
| Your situation | Upgrade to OLED | Keep your 2024 | Buy a discounted 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| You work outdoors, on job sites, or near water and sinks | Yes. IP67 is the one feature with no workaround besides a sealed case. | Only with a rugged case you’re happy with | No, same exposure |
| You read in bright light or glare is your daily complaint | Yes, and look at nano-texture (256GB+) | If a matte screen protector already fixed it | No |
| Your tablet is a POS or inventory terminal on a counter | No, unless it gets wet | Yes | Yes, for a second terminal |
| You run on-device AI, heavy photo editing, or 3D/plan apps that lag | Yes. This is where Apple’s speed claims apply. | No | No |
| Field notes, email, PDFs, video calls | Only if another row also applies | Yes | Yes, if you don’t own one |
| You travel and weight matters | Maybe: 38 g lighter and 0.9 mm thinner | Yes, the difference is small | Yes |
| You need several tablets for staff | No, multiply the gap by the headcount | N/A | Yes |
| Your budget is fixed and the gap matters most | No | Yes | Yes |
The OLED model earns its price through water resistance, display quality, and speed for heavy apps. If none of those solve a real problem, the 2024 model does the job for less.
Upgrade if you’ll actually use the new parts
Upgrade when at least one of these is true:
- Water and dust are part of your workday. Rain, a wet shop floor, a dusty site. The 2024 model has no IP rating. This is the clearest reason to pay up.
- You fight the screen. The new display has 600 nits SDR against 500 on the 2024 model, OLED contrast, and an optional nano-texture finish to cut glare.
- Your apps are slow today. If plan markup, photo editing, or AI features stutter on the A17 Pro, Apple’s claimed gains (up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU, 2.7x graphics, 4.5x AI) are aimed at you. Those are Apple’s numbers; independent testing isn’t out yet.
- You want Wi-Fi 7 for a reason. Only matters if your shop already has Wi-Fi 7 access points.
If you upgrade, trade in or sell the 2024 model. Apple Trade In values depend on condition.
Keep your 2024, or buy one discounted
If none of the upgrade reasons apply, the 2024 model is the pick. Keep yours if it runs your POS, inventory, and notes apps without lag, stays in a case away from water, and lasts the day. The new one has the same 10-hour battery rating, and your Pencil Pro works on both. The 2024 model already supports Apple Intelligence, 5G on cellular models, and USB-C. Spend the difference on a real bottleneck instead.
If you don’t own one yet, or you need tablets for staff, buy a discounted 2024. That works as long as you don’t need IP67:
- One tablet: Apple refurb at $509 is the cheapest 128GB Wi-Fi option we found, with a new battery and full warranty. Amazon has it new at $559.99. (Refurb checked Oct 29, 2026, 7:08 AM ET; Amazon 7:06 AM ET; new-model prices 7:05 AM ET.)
- A fleet: three 128GB Wi-Fi tablets cost $2,097 for the new OLED model versus $1,527 refurbished 2024. That’s $570, most of a fourth tablet.
- Cellular: the refurb 2024 at $639 undercuts the new $849 by $210.
Refurb stock moves, and Apple notes supplies are limited. If your configuration is gone, check back before paying new-model prices.
Trade-offs and skip-if
OLED model trade-offs
- Costs $100 more at launch than the 2024 model did, and $139 to $190 more than a discounted 2024 today.
- New finishes are midnight and starlight only.
- Speed claims are Apple’s own. Wait for independent reviews if speed is your only reason.
- Nano-texture forces you to at least 256GB.
Skip the OLED model if: your mini stays dry, your apps run fine, and you’d mostly be paying for contrast and AI speed you won’t notice in a POS or notes app.
2024 model trade-offs
- No water or dust rating.
- Dimmer, LED-backlit IPS screen with no nano-texture option.
- Older chip, with less headroom for heavy and AI-driven apps.
Skip the 2024 model if: your tablet gets wet, or it’s going to be your only work tablet for the next five years and the price gap is small for you.
Skip both if: a phone already covers what you do on the mini, or you really need a bigger screen for plans and spreadsheets. Our tablet comparison covers cheaper and larger options. If you’re weighing a foldable phone in place of a small tablet, read our iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 breakdown.
Buy checklist and next steps
Work through this before you spend anything:
- List your top three tablet tasks. Match each one to a row in the decision matrix above.
- Pick storage first. 128GB is enough for most POS, notes, and docs work. Go 256GB for nano-texture or offline media, 512GB only for the 6-core CPU or lots of local files.
- Decide on cellular. If the tablet leaves Wi-Fi often, cellular adds $150 on the new model. Both models use eSIM only, with no physical SIM.
- Check your accessories. Pencil Pro and Pencil (USB-C) work on both. Cases and folios won’t carry over: the new model is 5.4 mm thin and a different size, and Apple sells a new Smart Folio for it.
- Price the 2024 options and your trade-in. Check Apple’s refurb page and the Amazon listing below; prices change daily. Your trade-in value sets your real upgrade cost.
- If you’re upgrading, preorder at Apple (or another authorized retailer). It ships November 6. Apple Store purchases are unlocked.
- Set it up before you need it. Move your POS app, sign in to inventory and payment accounts, and run a test sale before the old tablet goes in the drawer.

Quick answers
Should I upgrade from the 2024 iPad mini to the OLED iPad mini?
Only if you’ll use IP67, the brighter OLED display, or the A20 Pro’s speed in heavy apps. Otherwise keep it.
How much is the OLED iPad mini, and what does $849 get you?
It starts at $699 for 128GB Wi-Fi. $849 is the 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Nano-texture adds $100 and is only available on 256GB ($899 Wi-Fi) and 512GB ($1,099 Wi-Fi). Prices checked Oct 29, 2026, 7:05 AM ET at Apple.
Is the OLED iPad mini waterproof?
No. It’s rated IP67 (up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes in Apple’s lab tests). That covers rain and spills, not swimming.
Which one to buy
If your iPad mini gets wet, fights glare, or lags in heavy apps, upgrade. If it already does the job, keep it. If you’re buying fresh or buying several, a discounted 2024 model at $509 to $560 does the core work for $139 to $190 less per tablet.
Product pick: Apple iPad mini (A17 Pro, 2024), 128GB Wi-Fi, Space Gray Best fit by our criteria: you don’t need water resistance, you want Pencil Pro support and Apple Intelligence, and the price gap matters more than OLED. $559.99 on Amazon, checked Oct 29, 2026, 7:06 AM ET (list $599).
