Note: Amazon announced the Alexa Tablets on October 8, 2026, one day before this Alexa Tablet vs Fire tablet guide was written. Preorders are open now, and Amazon’s own product pages list a release date of October 14, 2026. Prices were checked on Amazon and apple.com on October 9, 2026. No full independent reviews exist yet; everything below is based on published specs and early hands-on reports.
For more than a decade, the Fire tablet answered one question: what’s the cheapest screen that works? It was the tablet you handed a kid, bolted to a counter, or left in the break room, because a $155 slate you can replace without a meeting beats a $450 one you have to babysit.
That answer just got retired. On October 8, Amazon announced three Alexa-branded tablets that run full Android with the Google Play Store, and said it’s ending the Fire line. CNBC reports Amazon is no longer manufacturing new Fire units, and the cheapest Alexa Tablet costs $229.99, about $75 more than the Fire HD 10 (CNBC).
So if you’re shopping for a tablet this month, for yourself, a family member, or a small shop that runs on cheap screens, you have three real options: preorder an Alexa Tablet, buy a Fire tablet before the line is gone, or skip Amazon and get the $449 iPad. Here’s how to pick, and when each answer is wrong.
Alexa Tablet vs Fire Tablet vs iPad: the short answer
- Most people who were going to buy a Fire HD 10: get the Alexa Tablet 11 ($329.99). Google Play alone fixes the Fire’s biggest problem.
- Tight budget, or a tablet that will get broken: a Fire HD 10 at $154.99 is still a reasonable buy, as long as you accept Fire OS and the support clock.
- Reading, documents, and pen work: the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro Nanomatte ($549.99) is the most interesting tablet Amazon has made.
- Already on iPhone and Mac, or need specific iPad apps: buy the iPad (A16) at $449.
- One-handed reading and travel: the Alexa Tablet 8 ($229.99) is the small one, but check the screen specs before you buy.
What Amazon actually announced
Amazon’s lineup has three tablets: the Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. All three use aluminum unibody construction, run Android with the full Google Play Store, and have Alexa+ built in (Amazon).
The change that matters most is the software. Fire tablets ran Fire OS, Amazon’s own version of Android, and used Amazon’s app store, which limited which apps you could get (CNBC). The Alexa Tablets run regular Android with Google Play, and Amazon names YouTube, Netflix, Gmail, and Google Docs among the apps you get. Wired reports they launch on Android 16, should get Android 17 early in 2027, and come with a commitment of at least four years of software updates (Wired).
That’s what makes the price jump easier to accept. A Fire tablet was cheap partly because it was limited.

Prices and the October 14 release date are from Amazon’s product pages, checked October 9. Amazon’s announcement says the tablets ship October 14 in the US, Mexico, and Canada, and October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain (Amazon). If you’ve seen October 19 quoted for the US, that’s the European date.
Watch the ads. The Alexa Tablet 8 and 11 prices above include lockscreen ads. Notebookcheck reports that removing them adds $20 (Notebookcheck). Budget $349.99 for an ad-free Alexa Tablet 11, not $329.99.
Accessories for the 12 Pro are extra: the Pro Keyboard is $149.99 and the Pro Pen is $89.99 (Amazon).
The new floor is $75 above the old one, and the 12 Pro sits above the base iPad. Chart: Ctrl Alt Orion, from Amazon and Apple prices.

Sources for the table: Amazon for prices, RAM, storage, battery claims, and the Alexa Tablet 8’s weight; Wired for display resolution, refresh rate, and brightness; Notebookcheck for the Alexa Tablet 11’s stylus support; the Amazon listing for the Fire HD 10; Apple for the iPad. Where a cell says “Not checked,” we didn’t find a primary source and left it blank rather than guess.
A few details from those sources that don’t fit in a table:
- Alexa Tablet 11: MediaTek 8189 (Kompanio 540) chip, no microSD slot, no headphone jack, no DisplayPort out over USB-C, IP52, fingerprint reader, and 27W charging with a charger that isn’t in the box (Notebookcheck).
- Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: a 4nm 8-core chip, quad Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, 6.5mm thin, and Amazon claims nearly three times the processing and nine times the graphics performance of any tablet it has shipped (Amazon). Wired lists USB 3.2 Gen 1 with DisplayPort and an IP52 rating (Wired).
Fire tablet discontinued: should you buy one before they’re gone?
This is the question most Fire owners are asking, so let’s be direct.
What happens to Fire tablets: Amazon says it will keep supporting the Fire lineup for four years after the final shipment, existing devices keep working as they do today, and it’s no longer manufacturing new units (CNBC). Wired adds that Amazon will stop shipping Fire tablets in the next month or two (Wired).
So a Fire tablet you buy this month isn’t going to stop working next year. On Amazon’s stated policy, you get roughly four years of support counted from whenever the last unit ships. That’s about the same horizon as the four years of updates Wired reports for the new Alexa Tablets, but on hardware Amazon has stopped developing and an operating system it’s moving away from.
The Fire HD 10 is still in stock. Amazon listed the Fire HD 10 (4GB RAM, 32GB) at $154.99 and in stock on October 9. That’s a regular price, not a clearance price. CNBC calls the Fire HD 10 Amazon’s base model at $155. We’re not linking a Fire Max 11 because we couldn’t verify a current US listing for it.
Buy a Fire tablet now if:
- It’s going to a young kid, a kitchen counter, or a shop floor where it will be dropped, and you’ll replace it rather than repair it.
- You only use Amazon apps: Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, and the browser.
- You find it on sale. At $154.99 it’s a closer call, because the Alexa Tablet 8 is only $75 more and has Google Play.
Don’t buy a Fire tablet now if:
- You need Google apps. Fire tablets used Amazon’s app store, not Google Play (CNBC). Gmail, Google Docs, and YouTube are exactly what the new lineup fixes.
- You keep tablets five or more years. Fire’s four-year support window starts at the last shipment, which is soon, and no new Fire hardware is coming.
- You’re buying for a business that will run third-party software on it. More on that below.
Alexa Tablet vs Fire tablet: what you actually gain by upgrading
Going from a Fire HD 10 to an Alexa Tablet 11 costs $175 more at regular prices. On the published specs, that buys Google Play (most of the value), a 2560 x 1600 90Hz screen instead of Full HD, twice the RAM and base storage, an aluminum body with IP52 and a fingerprint reader, USI 2.0 pen support, and at least four years of updates starting on Android 16 (Wired).
What you lose: the price, mainly. No microSD slot and no headphone jack on the Alexa Tablet 11 (Notebookcheck) will annoy anyone who loaded movies onto a cheap card or plugged in wired earbuds.
Alexa+ on a tablet: useful or a sales funnel?
On-Screen Intelligence reads what’s on the page and answers in a side panel. It’s off by default. Image: Amazon.
Alexa+ is the headline feature, and it’s the part we’d weight least until reviewers have used it for a few weeks. Amazon says you can say “Alexa” or tap an “Ask Alexa” button and the assistant appears over whatever you’re doing. The big new feature is On-Screen Intelligence: Alexa reads what’s on your screen and helps with it. Amazon’s examples include pulling dates from a game schedule into your calendar (Amazon).
Two things to know before you pay for it:
It’s opt-in. Amazon says every On-Screen Intelligence feature is off by default, needs a deliberate opt-in, and shows a visual indicator when Alexa can see the screen (Amazon). If you’re handing these to staff or kids, leave it off until you know what it does with what it sees.
It’s also a shopping tool. In CNBC’s demo, Amazon devices boss Panos Panay showed Alexa finding a burger press from a TikTok cooking clip, then said, “She’ll do the homework, and if things work out, she’s going to bring up a shopping list where I can just hit buy now” (CNBC). That’s honest, and it tells you who the feature is partly for.
The subscription detail: MacRumors reports the tablets include tablet-specific Alexa+ access, while full Alexa+ across compatible Alexa devices needs Prime or a separate Alexa+ subscription (MacRumors). You don’t need a subscription to use the tablet.
Alexa Tablet vs iPad: where the $449 iPad still wins
The base iPad is the iPad (A16), and Apple sells it from $449 for 128GB Wi-Fi, $549 for 256GB, and $749 for 512GB (Apple). It has an 11-inch 2360 x 1640 display at 500 nits, weighs 477g (Wi-Fi), is rated for up to 10 hours of web or video, and supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation) (Apple).
MacRumors puts the comparison plainly: the Alexa Tablet 11 starts below the $449 iPad, “although Apple’s model includes 128GB of storage” (MacRumors). Compare like for like:
| Alexa Tablet 11, 128GB, no ads | iPad (A16), 128GB | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $399.99 ($379.99 + $20 to remove ads) | $449 |
| Display | 2560 x 1600, 90Hz | 2360 x 1640 |
| RAM | 8GB | Not on Apple’s spec page |
| Stylus | USI 2.0, sold separately | Apple Pencil, sold separately |
| Apps | Google Play | App Store |
The ad-free 128GB price is our math from Amazon’s $379.99 listing and Notebookcheck’s $20 ad-removal figure.
At equal storage the gap is about $50. That’s small enough that the decision comes down to ecosystem, not price.
Get the iPad if:
- You use an iPhone or Mac. AirDrop, iMessage, and shared iCloud data matter more than any spec on this page.
- The apps you need are iPad apps, such as a particular POS, music, drawing, or school app. Check before you buy anything.
- You want a tablet with a long track record. The Alexa Tablets haven’t been reviewed yet, and the iPad is a known quantity.
Get an Alexa Tablet instead if:
- You’re on Android or Windows, use Google Workspace, or your household runs on Prime, Kindle, and Alexa.
- You want the smoother 90Hz or 120Hz screen at a lower price.
- You want a 12-inch screen. MacRumors notes that the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro costs less than the $749 11-inch iPad Air while offering a larger display and higher refresh rate (MacRumors).
For a small shop: the counter and kiosk angle
A lot of Fire tablets ended up doing jobs Amazon didn’t design them for: menu screens, sign-in kiosks, inventory lookups, and cheap POS terminals. If that’s you, the Fire retirement affects you more than it affects someone who watches Netflix in bed.
The deciding fact is Google Play. Most POS and kiosk apps are on Google Play and the App Store. Before you compare screens or chips for counter work, confirm your software is in the device’s app store. Our best budget tablets for running a POS or kiosk guide covers the hardware side once that question is settled.
For counter use:
- Don’t stock up on Fire tablets for business software. You’d be buying hardware that can’t run most of the apps you’d want, on a platform with no future hardware.
- The Alexa Tablet 11 is the sensible step up, once your POS vendor confirms its Android app supports it. Ask before you preorder five of them.
- Turn Alexa off at the counter. A screen-reading assistant on a device that shows customer orders is something you leave disabled. Amazon says On-Screen Intelligence is off by default, so keep it that way.
- Price in the ad removal. A lockscreen ad on a customer-facing tablet looks unprofessional. Add $20 a unit.
If you’re kitting out a dorm instead of a counter, the same Google Play logic applies, and our best budget tablets for college students roundup covers the note-taking and battery trade-offs in more depth.
Our take on each tablet
These ratings are based on the manufacturers’ published specs, the Amazon listings, and the early hands-on reporting cited here, weighed against the October 9 price. We haven’t tested these tablets ourselves, so treat the ratings as a buyer’s read of the specs, not lab results.
Our take: Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 — 4/5
The Fire HD 10 replacement most people should buy: Google Play, a sharp 90Hz screen, and 8GB of RAM for less than an iPad.
- Pro: Full Google Play Store, which fixes the Fire’s biggest limitation
- Pro: 11-inch 2560 x 1600 display at 90Hz, with 8GB of RAM
- Pro: At least four years of software updates, per Wired
- Con: No microSD slot and no headphone jack
- Con: Lockscreen ads at $329.99; removing them adds $20
Price: $329.99 (64GB) and $379.99 (128GB) on Amazon, checked October 9, 2026. Preorder; ships October 14.
Our take: Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro (Nanomatte) — 4/5
The most ambitious tablet Amazon has made and the best fit for readers and note-takers, but it’s a $549.99 bet on a first-generation product.
- Pro: 12-inch 3:2 display at 120Hz, with an anti-glare Nanomatte option
- Pro: Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard support, plus DisplayPort over USB-C
- Pro: 16 hours of rated video playback
- Con: The keyboard ($149.99) and pen ($89.99) push it past $780
- Con: No full independent reviews yet; early coverage is hands-on only
Price: $549.99 Nanomatte and $499.99 standard on Amazon, checked October 9, 2026. Preorder; ships October 14.
Our take: Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 — 3.5/5
Light and portable with Google Play, but its 1340 x 800, 60Hz screen is weak for $229.99.
- Pro: 329g aluminum body that’s easy to hold in one hand
- Pro: Google Play and up to 14 hours of rated video playback
- Con: 1340 x 800 resolution at 60Hz and 400 nits, the weakest screen in the lineup
- Con: 4GB of RAM at $75 more than the Fire HD 10
Price: $229.99 on Amazon, checked October 9, 2026. Preorder; ships October 14.
Our take: Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) — 2.5/5
Still a fine cheap screen for kids and Amazon content, but at full price it’s a hard sell next to a line with Google Play.
- Pro: $154.99 and in stock, the cheapest way into a 10-inch Amazon tablet
- Pro: Amazon says Fire tablets get four years of support after the final shipment
- Con: Fire OS and the Amazon Appstore, with no Google Play
- Con: No new Fire hardware is coming, so this is the end of the line
Price: $154.99 on Amazon, checked October 9, 2026. Wait for a sale if you can.
Our take: Apple iPad (A16) — 4/5
The safe pick for iPhone households. It costs more than the Alexa Tablet 11, but it comes with 128GB and a long track record.
- Pro: 128GB of storage in the $449 base model
- Pro: Apple Pencil support and the iPad app library
- Pro: A known quantity, rather than a product that hasn’t been reviewed yet
- Con: $119 more than the base Alexa Tablet 11, with no high-refresh display listed
- Con: Only worth it if you’re in Apple’s ecosystem or need iPad-only apps
Price: $449 (128GB Wi-Fi) at apple.com, checked October 9, 2026.

When none of these is the right answer
- If your current Fire tablet works, keep it. Amazon has said existing devices keep working, with support for four years after the final shipment. An upgrade you don’t need isn’t a deal.
- If you need a laptop, buy a laptop. A $549.99 tablet plus a $149.99 keyboard and an $89.99 pen costs $789.97. That’s laptop money, and a laptop runs desktop software.
- If you need this exact app to work tomorrow, don’t preorder. The tablets ship October 14, and independent reviews will follow. The Fire HD 10 and the iPad are on sale today.
