iPhone Duo vs Z Fold 8 is the foldable choice in front of a lot of buyers right now. Apple’s first foldable starts at $1,999. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 lists at $1,899.99 and sells for less. Both have a 7.6-inch inner screen and two rear cameras with no telephoto lens. They differ on weight, dust resistance, charging and software. Here’s the price, the specs, the charger the Duo needs, and who should buy which.

Note: iPhone Duo preorders opened October 16, 2026, and it goes on sale October 23. Full reviews aren’t out and we haven’t tested it, so nothing below is a test result. Durability, battery life and the crease are unproven. Amazon prices were checked October 18, 2026.

iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8: the short answer

  • You’re staying on iPhone and you want a foldable: the iPhone Duo ($1,999 and up) is the only option. Budget about $35 more for a 60W-capable adapter, because none comes in the box.
  • You’re on Android, or you want the lighter, cheaper foldable: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 53 grams lighter and was $1,699.99 on Amazon on October 18.
  • Cameras matter most: neither. Both crop the main sensor for 2x. Samsung’s pricier Fold 8 Ultra has a real 3x telephoto.
  • You’re on the fence: wait for reviews and durability tests.

iPhone Duo price, preorders and release date

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9 (Apple Newsroom). Preorders opened at 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16, in more than 70 countries and regions, including the US. It’s available from Friday, October 23, and reaches 28 more countries on October 30.

US prices at Apple’s store, unlocked:

  • 256GB: $1,999
  • 512GB: $2,199
  • 1TB: $2,599
  • 2TB: $3,199

Apple also offers $83.29 a month over 24 months with Apple Card Monthly Installments, and Klarna-run Apple Upgrade leases from $57.99 a month. Its Duo page advertises up to $1,200 in carrier credit after trade-in (Apple); read the terms first. Apple’s own cases are $79 (Case) and $129 (Folio with Kickstand).

What the Galaxy Z Fold 8 costs right now

Samsung lists the Fold 8 at $1,899.99 (256GB), $2,099.99 (512GB) and $2,499.99 (1TB). On October 13, Samsung’s store had it $200 off at every size without a trade-in, and Best Buy matched at 256GB, per SammyGuru. On October 18, Amazon had the unlocked 256GB Graphite model at $1,699.99, sold by Amazon.

So at list price the Duo costs about $100 more at each shared storage size, and about $300 more against Samsung’s discount. Only the Duo offers 2TB.

Duo figures are Apple’s (weight and thickness via SammyGuru). Fold 8 figures are Samsung’s via SammyGuru, with SIM and fingerprint from Amazon.

Weight and thickness: Samsung’s clearest win

The Fold 8 is 201g; the Duo is 254g. Those 53 grams are what you’d notice first reading one-handed. The Fold 8 is thinner too. Apple calls the Duo the thinnest iPhone ever when open, and it is, but not next to a Fold. Samsung got here over three generations: the Z Fold 6 was 239g and the Z Fold 7 was 215g, SammyGuru notes.

Water and dust: Apple’s clearest win, on paper

The Duo is IP68, lab-tested to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, Apple says. The Fold 8 is IP48. The 4 in IP48 only covers solids larger than 1mm, so only the Duo claims to be dust-tight, and grit is what foldable hinges hate. But Apple’s footnote says resistance “might decrease as a result of normal wear,” and liquid damage isn’t covered under warranty. Nobody knows yet how either rating holds up on a moving hinge.

Is the iPhone Duo durable? Nobody knows yet

Apple describes a hinge of more than 100 components, a grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, and an inner screen with a scratch-resistant coating and a polymer layer it says is up to 40 percent stiffer than others in the industry. Those are design claims, not test results.

Apple hardware VP Tom Marieb told TechRadar the matte nano-texture finish will keep the crease hard to see over time: “Hold us accountable to that, please,” per 9to5Mac. But there is a crease. Apple says the finish “minimizes crease visibility,” and SammyGuru says an early look showed it after a few folds. SammyGuru’s own Fold 8 crease also got more noticeable within weeks.

Treat durability as unproven for both, and especially for Apple’s first hinge. One known cost: SammyGuru reports Samsung replaces the inner screen protector free once in year one, then charges $19.99; Apple charges $19 for the Duo’s matte layer with AppleCare+ and hasn’t said what it costs without.

Cameras: the same compromise on both

Neither has a telephoto lens. Both pair a main camera (50MP on the Fold 8, 48MP on the Duo) with an ultrawide, and both get 2x by cropping the main sensor. Apple’s FAQ lists 0.5x, 1x and 2x.

PetaPixel says the Duo’s main camera is the base iPhone 17’s, not the Pro’s, and the Duo has no ProRAW, shooting only JPEG and HEIF. It also lacks the iPhone 18 Pro’s new Pro camera controls, and its front camera is 12MP instead of 18MP. PetaPixel calls a $2,000 iPhone with worse cameras than a $1,200 iPhone 18 Pro “not an easy pill to swallow.”

The Duo’s extras are second-screen tricks: Duo Preview shows subjects the shot, Smart Take fires when everyone’s posing, and Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations to get kids to look. Its inner selfie camera hides under the display, where the Fold 8 has a visible 10MP cutout. Apple hasn’t published that camera’s resolution.

Performance: no compromise, if early numbers hold

Apple says the Duo’s vapor chamber gives it up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. AppleInsider reported the first Geekbench 7 results, “if legit”: 3,986 single-core and 11,067 multi-core, against 3,980 and 11,540 for the iPhone 18 Pro. Those are early leaked numbers, not our tests, and say nothing about heat in long sessions.

Software: eight generations vs one

The Fold 8 runs One UI 9 on Android 17 with up to seven OS upgrades, and Quick Share works with AirDrop. The Duo runs iOS 27 with Split View, two apps side by side, and Apple says Netflix, Zoom and Slack already support it. SammyGuru reports that apps not updated for iOS 27 can appear in a narrow view with black bars, per Apple’s documentation.

The Fold 8 doesn’t support Flex Mode, so its hinge won’t hold a half-open angle. Apple says the Duo can be propped up for hands-free FaceTime. Siri AI won’t be available in the EU at first.

Charging: what the iPhone Duo needs

Now the iPhone Duo charger question. There’s no adapter in the box. Apple’s footnotes say wired fast charging, up to 50 percent in around 20 minutes, needs a 60W-capable USB-C cable and USB-PD adapter, sold separately. Apple tested with its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.

Wireless fast charging, up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes, uses MagSafe or Qi2. Apple’s press release says to pair the MagSafe Charger with a 35W-or-higher adapter; its MagSafe product page says 30W. The 40W Dynamic adapter covers both, so it’s our pick.

Check that your USB-C cable is rated for 60W. Apple’s materials we read don’t say whether one comes in the box. An older adapter still works, just slower. Apple’s Duo cases support MagSafe and Qi2 25W. The Fold 8 does 45W wired with Samsung’s charger, sold separately.

Is the iPhone Duo worth it?

For most people, not yet: $1,999 is a lot for a first-generation hinge nobody has tested. If your phone works, wait a few weeks for reviews.

It makes sense now if you’re staying on iPhone, want a phone that opens into a small tablet, and accept 254 grams, no telephoto, no ProRAW, eSIM only and Touch ID. You get IP68, Apple Pencil support later this year, up to 2TB and iOS on a big screen.

Don’t need a foldable? A regular flagship costs far less; see our Nothing Phone 3 vs Pixel 11 vs Galaxy S26 comparison.

Who should buy which

iPhone Duo: you’re in iMessage with a Mac or Apple Watch, want dust-tight, or need 2TB.

Galaxy Z Fold 8: weight matters, you’re happy on Android, or you’d rather keep $300.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: you want real zoom. SammyGuru lists a 10MP 3x telephoto and 8-inch inner screen at 215g, from $2,099.99.

Neither yet: you’re nervous about a first-generation hinge.
