The Mac mini Now Costs $899 for the Specs That Were $599: What to Actually Put in the Back Office
Apple announced the M6 Mac mini on August 25 at a record $899 — the same 16GB/256GB configuration that started at $599 twenty-two months ago. The chip isn't why. Here's what the memory shortage did to the price, and the four machines a small shop should actually be choosing between right now.

Note: Apple announced the M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini on August 25, 2026 — four days old as of this writing. Neither ships until September 22. Nobody has run a real back office on one yet, including me. This piece is about the price, not the review.
Here is the whole story in one line.
In October 2024, a Mac mini with 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD cost $599. On August 25, 2026, Apple announced a Mac mini with 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD for $899.
Same memory. Same storage. Fifty percent more money.
The M6 chip inside it is genuinely good — first 2nm silicon Apple has shipped, 12 CPU cores, 12 GPU cores, a dual Neural Engine, 170GB/s of memory bandwidth. That’s not the point. The point is that if you’re the person who buys the box that sits under the counter and holds the backups, you are now being quoted $300 more for the same shelf of parts, and you need to decide what to do about it before the quote goes up again.
Mini PCs with 32GB of RAM are still under $700 on Amazon. That gap is the entire subject of this article.
The price ladder, in order
This is worth laying out because the increase didn’t happen in one jump, and if you only looked at the sticker twice you’d have missed the middle step.

In May, Apple stopped selling the 256GB model entirely and made 512GB the floor, which moved the entry price to $799. That read like a spec bump at the time — more storage, more money, fine.
Then in August the 256GB tier came back, and it came back at $899.
So the honest comparison isn’t “$799 to $899.” It’s $599 to $899 for the identical memory and storage configuration, in under two years, on a product line whose whole reputation was being the cheap one.
The chip is not why
Apple will tell you about the M6, and the M6 is real:
- 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, up from 10 and 10 on the M4
- Dual 16-core Neural Engine — the first time Apple has shipped two
- First 2nm chip Apple has ever sold, in a $899 desktop, before it’s in a phone
- 170GB/s memory bandwidth
- Claimed up to 40% faster CPU, up to 4× faster on AI tasks, 2× graphics, 2× storage speed vs the M4
- Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet standard (10Gb as an upgrade), Thunderbolt 4, up to three displays
Every one of those is an upgrade. None of them explains a $300 increase on the base configuration, because the base configuration’s memory and storage did not move. You’re paying more for the same 16GB and the same 256GB.
What actually moved is what those parts cost Apple.
The real reason: memory is the most expensive thing in your computer now
The 2026 memory market has been the single biggest input to hardware pricing this year, and it barely gets covered outside component press.
Conventional DRAM contract prices rose an estimated 90–95% quarter over quarter in Q1 2026, then another 58–63% in Q2. TrendForce projects a further 13–18% in Q3 for conventional DRAM and 10–15% for NAND flash — slower, but still up.
The cause isn’t a factory fire or a shipping lane. It’s allocation: AI server demand pulled wafer capacity toward high-bandwidth memory, and manufacturers scaled back conventional DRAM and consumer NAND because the margins are better elsewhere. That’s a strategic reallocation, not a seasonal blip, which is why nobody credible is forecasting a return to 2024 pricing.
The downstream effect is brutal and easy to verify at retail:
- Memory is now roughly 35% of a PC’s bill of materials, up from about 20% a year ago
- A 32GB DDR5 kit now starts around $375 — kits in this class were routinely under $100 in 2024
- NVMe storage has roughly doubled over the same period
- Every major PC maker has warned of 15–20% price increases for 2026

Against that backdrop, a 50% increase on a base Mac mini stops looking like Apple being Apple and starts looking like the market. Which is worse news, not better, because it means the same thing is happening to every box you were going to buy instead.
What a back-office machine actually does
Before you spend anything, be honest about the job. In a 3–10 person shop, the box under the counter or in the stockroom is doing some subset of:
- Holding the file share — invoices, product photos, scans, the stuff that must not live only on someone’s laptop
- Running local backups before anything goes to cloud, so a ransomware week doesn’t become a ransomware quarter
- Driving a display — menu board, queue screen, spec sheet on the wall
- Being the one machine that runs the accounting package that refuses to be a web app
- Sitting on the network as a print and label server
- Increasingly: running a local model for the boring text work, so you’re not metering an API for every product description
Look at that list. Exactly one item on it is CPU-bound, and it isn’t the important one. File serving and backup are storage and network bound. Local models are memory bound. The 2nm chip is not the constraint in any real back office I have ever set up.
This matters because the memory shortage has repriced precisely the two components you actually need, and left the component Apple is marketing largely alone.
The four options, honestly
1. A used or refurbished M4 Mac mini — the value pick right now
The M4 is still an excellent machine and it is about to be the previous model. Refurbished and used M4 minis are the arbitrage in this market: the price floor moved up underneath them, which makes anything bought at the old floor a bargain by comparison.

The caveat: buy 16GB, never 8GB, and check the storage tier. Apple’s memory is on-package — you cannot add RAM after purchase, ever. A cheap 8GB machine is a machine you replace, not a machine you upgrade.
2. The new M6 — if you’re genuinely Mac-locked
Some shops are Mac shops. If your point-of-sale, your design work, your accountant’s file format, or your one indispensable app is macOS-only, the argument ends there and the M6 at $899 is the machine. It’s a substantial generational jump and it’ll run for years.
Two things to know before you configure it:
- The M6 tops out at 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage. The M5 Pro at $1,699 goes to 64GB and 8TB. If local AI is anywhere in your plan, that ceiling is the spec that matters, not the core count.
- Neither memory nor storage is upgradeable after purchase. Every gigabyte is a decision you make once, at checkout, at Apple’s price, in the worst memory market in a decade.
3. An x86 mini PC — the price-per-gigabyte pick
For a pure back-office box — files, backups, a screen, light local automation — a Windows or Linux mini PC is still dramatically cheaper per gigabyte of RAM and per terabyte of storage, and both are user-upgradeable on most models, which in this market is worth real money.

Be aware the high end of this category got hit hardest. A GMKtec EVO-X2 with 128GB of unified memory sold for roughly $2,000 in October 2025 and now goes for about $3,299 — a ~60% increase driven almost entirely by LPDDR5 costs. If you want a big-memory box, mid-tier machines like the Beelink SER10 MAX around $1,799 are the sane end of that market.
4. Buy nothing — the pick most shops should make
The most likely correct answer for a small shop reading this: your existing box is fine, and the money goes to storage instead.
Most back-office machines fail on capacity, not compute. If your current mini or tower is sluggish because its 256GB drive is 94% full, you do not need a new computer. You need a 2TB NVMe drive or a RAM upgrade, both of which cost a fraction of a new machine even at today’s inflated prices, and both of which you can install in twenty minutes.
Spend the difference on the thing that actually loses you money: a real backup that isn’t a USB drive someone remembers to plug in.

The upgrade trap, specifically
This is the part that costs small businesses the most money and gets the least attention.
On a Mac mini, memory and storage are decided once, at purchase, forever. Unified memory is on-package. The SSD is not a user-serviceable part. Whatever you click at checkout is what that machine is for its entire service life.
In a normal memory market that’s an annoyance. In this market it’s the whole financial decision, because you are locking in today’s inflated component prices at a manufacturer’s margin, on parts you can never re-buy cheaper later.
On a typical x86 mini PC, you buy the chassis now at a chassis price, run it on 16GB, and add the second memory stick in 2027 when — if — DRAM comes back down. That optionality is worth something real right now, and it’s the strongest argument in the x86 column this year. It’s also, bluntly, the strongest argument for buying the smallest Apple configuration that does the job rather than “future-proofing” at Apple’s upgrade rates.
If local AI is part of the plan
A growing number of small shops are running a model on their own hardware rather than metering an API — for product descriptions, email drafts, and file triage. If that’s you, the relevant spec is memory, full stop.
The current class of 30B-parameter local agent models fits in roughly 16–20GB at 4-bit quantization. That means:
- 32GB M6: comfortable for a 30B-class model with real context, and nothing much left over
- 64GB M5 Pro: comfortable, with room for a bigger model or a second workload
- 16GB anything: don’t bother; you’ll spend the savings on frustration

Short version: if local models are in your two-year plan, buy the memory now, on a machine where memory is either cheap or upgradeable. That is not the base M6.
What to skip
- Skip the 10Gb Ethernet upgrade unless you are genuinely moving video files across a wired network all day. 2.5Gb is standard now and it saturates a small shop’s actual usage with room to spare.
- Skip “future-proofing” storage at Apple’s rates. Buy the smallest internal drive that fits your working set and put the rest on an external SSD — Thunderbolt 4 is fast enough that you will not notice, and the drive outlives the computer.
- Skip the M5 Pro at $1,699 unless you have a named workload that needs 64GB, Thunderbolt 5 or 8TB. “It’s more future-proof” is not a named workload.
- Skip waiting for prices to drop. Nobody in the memory supply chain is forecasting a return to 2024 levels; the current forecasts run up through 2027. Waiting is a strategy with a negative expected value right now.
- Skip buying without a UPS. A back-office box that holds your files and takes a hard power cut is a restore job waiting to happen. A basic UPS is about $70 and it’s the cheapest insurance in the building.
Quick answers
Is the M6 Mac mini worth $899? If you’re Mac-locked, yes — it’s a real generational jump and it’ll serve for years. If you’re not, you’re paying a significant premium over an x86 mini PC with more upgradeable memory, for a chip that isn’t the bottleneck in back-office work.
Why did the Mac mini get more expensive? Memory. DRAM contract prices rose ~90–95% in Q1 2026 and ~58–63% in Q2, with further increases forecast through Q3. Memory is now about 35% of a PC’s bill of materials, up from ~20% a year ago. Every major PC maker has warned of 15–20% increases.
Should I buy an M4 Mac mini instead? For most back-office jobs, yes — provided it’s a 16GB model. It does everything the M6 does for the work described here, and the price gap is currently the best value in the line.
Can I add RAM to a Mac mini later? No. Unified memory is on-package on every Apple silicon Mac. Storage isn’t user-serviceable either. Configure it once, correctly.
Will memory prices come back down? Not on current forecasts. TrendForce still projects increases through Q3 2026, and the reallocation of wafer capacity toward AI memory is structural rather than cyclical. Plan for expensive memory, not for a dip.
When does the M6 Mac mini ship? Pre-orders opened August 25, 2026; units ship September 22, 2026.
The bottom line
The Mac mini did not get $300 better. It got $300 more expensive, because the two components in it that a small business actually depends on — memory and storage — are in the middle of the worst price shock in a decade, and Apple’s memory is the one kind you can never buy again cheaper.
If you’re Mac-locked, buy the base M6, keep the configuration honest, and put your storage on an external drive.
If you’re not, this is the year the x86 mini PC argument wins on the merits, mostly because you can add memory to it in 2027 and you cannot add memory to a Mac ever.
And if your current box still boots and still has free space, the correct purchase is a bigger drive and a backup that actually runs.
One last thing, and it’s the thing we actually do here: the box is rarely the problem. The problem is that your register, your storefront, your inventory and your books don’t agree with each other, and a faster machine under the counter makes reconciling them by hand slightly less painful at 11pm. It doesn’t make it stop — that part we build.
